What is a good open-source alternative to Microsoft Project? Mac OS-X or Linux binaries available would be a huge plus.

I recommend OpenProj. It's written in Java, so it runs on Linux and Mac OS X as well.
There are .deb and .dmg files available.

You could try some of the open-source projects from this list.

I like GanntProject because it is easy to use and makes nice charts. It also runs on multiple platforms.

For those of you not concerned by the portability of the MS-Project alternative, give openworkbench a try (for windows).

Cannot say if it is good it is, since I never used it. My room mate used it once or twice and likes it.
