I started exploring CouchDB and I am interested in following:

  1. Is there or will there be a Windows install?
  2. If there is, is there a shared hosting provider that offers CouchDB?
  3. Not knowing much about it, can it be somehow embedded in my application or bin deployed (don't laugh).

The FAQs on CouchDB Wiki has the following statement:

"Windows is not officially supported but it should work, please let us know."

There's a Windows version now, available on CouchIO (http://www.couch.io/get) blog.

  1. Download & Unzip
  2. Double-Click bin\couchdb
  3. Relax!
  4. Visit http://127.0.0.1:5984/_utils

I found one more at:http://people.virginia.edu/~lmb7s/couch/

These are old versions. Please vote up my answer below with a link to the current windows build. At the time of the post CouchDB is a 1.0.1 which is much more feature rich the the versions listed in these first two comments and much easier to install.

  1. Since version 0.10.0 the latest Windows binary installer is available at the CouchDB Wiki.
  2. Someone asked this question elsewhere at stackoverflow but besides Cloudant and couch.io there doesn't seem to be anything else available yet. (Couch.io is still in beta.).
A friend of mine managed to convince his shared hosting provider to install it for him, but they took a lot of convincing.
I know over at Dreamhost it's been on the 'vote list' since 2008-07-16 and I've not seen any leads elsewhere that any of the big companies are seriously considering it yet, but it might be worth it to ask/vote for it at your favorite provider.
  3. Someone asked this question elsewhere on stackoverflow too, but the answers mostly suggest alternatives, so I'm guessing there's not really been any headway here either.

I've been following the buzz that's been going around about CouchDB for a while and if the amount of momentum it has gained is anything to go by, the answer to these questions could be quite different in a couple of months. Let's hope so.

Hope this helps.

To add to your very good answer, Cloudant offers a hosted version of CouchDB (currently in beta) - https://cloudant.com/ I just got my account, so I can't give it a full review yet, but I know the company has several of the Couch committers.

Check here for the latest Window installers for CouchDB. This is a simple double click operation. After the double click installer you can access futon at http://localhost:5984/_utils

If you need to restart couch then you can do so from the Windows Services "Apache CouchDB"

At the time of this post 1.0.1 is the preferred version. Don't use 1.0.0 as there is a problem with that version in general as noted here.. http://couchdb.apache.org/downloads.html

Please note that this is the latest version 1.0.1. Which includes authentication and other great features. The accepted answer above is 0.10.1 which at this point is quite old.
