Hello,

I have seen many software developers cv's and talked to people who arrange interviews about which certificates are most valuable and give great advantage over other candidates on the job, but none of there answers were the same. So which certificates are best to pass? Which ones will really stand you up from the gray candidate mass?

A:

A Ph.D in CS? just kidding... i think it really depends on what you are programming and IMO there is no real ranking, which certificates are "best"...

Obviously it depends on which job you're applying for.

I would rather emphasize what actual jobs and projects I've done in the past - no matter how modest. If you only have a pile of certificates, it's pretty vague...

I'm with you on this one. I have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and information Systems which doesn't count for much because employers most of the time, if not always, ask for experience first. Certifications do help to an extent though.

It depends on the position you are applying for.

For an entry level programmer it would be enough to get a bachelors in computer science.

For anything related to networking additional certifications like CCNA, CCNP would be preferable.

Can you explain the reason for the down vote?

No idea - stuck a +1 on. Don't 100% agree with your answer but definitely doesn't deserve a down vote

I'm not in favor of totally basing it on job availability (I wouldn't study & take an exam for a job I didn't want.), but since the question focuses on getting a job, you should do a job search in your area and see what is required and/or prefered.

You may find that non-IT companies or smaller are forced to rely on certifications to qualify developers since they may not be able to identify those who are skilled on their own.
