Try http://www.mr.ethz.ch/~majer/formula/formula.php. Just type in a LaTeX math expression and it prints a nice representation.

it's not open source, I'm actually also looking for one that is, but it's good and it's online - http://www.codecogs.com/components/equationeditor/equationeditor.php
it's the best thing i've seen all day (and i've been researching all day)
