Microsoft SharePoint 2007 Development: Unleashed

This book was really helpful with beginning to develop with the SharePoint Object Model.

I should note that it's not really a book for general SharePoint use, the author jumps into the development.

Best book by far SharePoint 2007 Web Content Management Development by Andrew Connell: http://bit.ly/2J5hEC

I would also recommend Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 by Ted Pattison: http://bit.ly/3IHG5A

I agree with IrishChieftan on Inside Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. I think it's the best book to help you get started developing for SharePoint. The first three chapters of the book are available online on MSDN.

I would also suggest you check out MSDN Ramp Up. There are two sections on SharePoint development that included videos, articles and hands-on labs.

Finally, I would recommend this series of webcasts hosted by Mike Benkovich
