We are developing a computer vision library, which we are releasing under the LGPL license. We are planning to incorporate in the next release code licensed under other open source licenses, like GPL, that allow free usage for research and educational purposes. Can we include these third-party source files without any modification, keeping their respective license advices?

Thanks a lot.

A:

What kind of licenses are

open source licenses, like GPL, that allow free usage for research and educational purposes

This sounds like these licenses include restrictions for other purposes. The GPL can't be one of these licenses since it does not restrict usage in any way. It even forbids adding such restrictions.

The same thing is true for the LGPL.

Please describe in more detail the scenario you have in mind.

  • What code do you hold the copyright in?
  • What is the license of the code you plan to incorporate?
  • In which way do you plan to incorporate third party code? Will the result be a derived work?
