I am upgrading an old compaq presario 2800 harddrive to a bigger one. When I phisically install the new drive and try to boot the following error appears:

1720 - SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure. Your hard disk drive is detecting an imminent failure. To ensure no data loss, backup contents and replace this hard disk. Attribute Failed: #1

What can be causing the problem?

If it's a new drive then I'd say it's probably hardware failure and probably get it RMA'd

In many bios's you are able to disable the SMART warning ... This does not solve the problem if there is a hardware issue ... just stops you from being notified on every boot.

The new drive you are putting in may not be capable of returning SMART errors ... and that may be the issue.

I already seeked that option in the bios but it is not availabel.

Have you tried putting it in another less-old PC and seeing what that PC reports for the SMART status? That will let you narrow it down to either busted-hard drive, or busted SMART monitoring stuff on the old presario

Yes, the disk works fine on other PC

It could be a problem with the drive controller or a compatibility problem. But in a working system, and SMART warning is a pretty good indication that you should get your data off the drive as soon as possible. Not all hard drive failures are preceded by a SMART warning, but most SMART warnings are followed by a drive failure (in my experience).
