1) You called the "Encipher" method, asking it to encrypt the first 8 bytes of "data". And that's just what it did. No problem there.

2) If you ask it to encrypt the first 64 bytes of "data", it fails because the data is shorter than 64 bytes. No problem there either.

3) The product of Blowfish encryption is an array of bytes that can't really be displayed by treating it as ASCII text because it contains all kinds of non-displayable and non-7bit characters. ASCIIEncoding replaces these with a question mark character.

To display the characters you should use a character set that covers at least one complete byte (8 bits, i.e. values from 0 to 255). ASCII is 7-bit ASCII (i.e. values from 0 9 127). To see the changes use UTF8 or Default for example.

@Obalix - even UTF8 or Default would have a hard time displaying characters in the 0-31 range. Additionally, a random byte-array like this would almost certainly not be a valid UTF-8 data. A better approach would be to use BitConverter.ToString(data) instead of trying to treat it as ASCII or other text.

and another question, it turns out that I can encrypt a string, which is a multiple of 8?ie lines are equal to the length of 8, 16, 24 and so on.but what if the string is equal to 17 or 34?

Isn't it apparent that all you have to do now is to remove all '-' characters and convert the string to lowercase? Try BitConverter.ToString(data).Replace("-", "").ToLowerInvariant() and see what you get.

The size has to be a multiple of 8 because Blowfish works with 8-byte blocks. Also, be aware that you are using Blowfish in ECB mode which is very unsecure - recommended reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Block_cipher_modes_of_operation
