We know the quick solution to this issue, but the occurance of this error has become much more widespread across our network in the last month. Whereas previously we've experienced this error on a machine once or twice a month, we now experience this issue on multiple laptops 2-3 times a day! This is becomming extrememly problematic for users, especially since many work offline, or have remote work. Here are a few additional important points:

  • We are using Microsoft Outlook 2007 Professional Edition
  • We are using Microsoft XP, 32 bit operating systems, and running Dell D630's, and E6400's
  • We are using Exchange 2003, and Microsoft server software 2003
  • We are using cached exchange mode, and also have Outlook configured to use RPC (Outlook connect anywhere) when working outside our network

Our past solutions to the issue have been to recreate the user's Outlook profile (which solves the issue, but erases their auto fill), or to delete the local .ost file in C:Documents & Settings, Username, Local Settings, Application Data, Outlook.ost

Both of these solutions only seem to last temporarily (one or two days before the .ost file is corrupted again, and the problem repeats).

Many of our users take their laptops to different locations around the office, and are supposed to close Outlook completely before moving, but sometimes leave Outlook open (which causes different sorts of issues).

Has anyone experienced this issue on this scale before, and if so, how did you fix the issue?

A:

Incidentally, I'm working late tonight and so is our Exchange Admin - he says:

This happens a lot when users laptops shut down there laptops wrong, bad hibernation and laptop just gets powered off. Possible com plug-ins and add-ons causing errors, like those that index these files.

In short: try tweaking hibernation options or training your users - ost files and laptops, this happens a lot.
