Hi guys,

Does anyone know a free self hosted alternative to Basecamp or Active Collab? Basic requirements would be projects, milestones, tasks, users, reminders, reports.

I've sped some time using this tools but now we need a tool for a project we're running and we're looking for some free alternative.

Thanks in advance for your time,
Constantin Tovisi

I don't think that there is really a complete and free replacement for any of those two, but you could check http://www.projectpier.org/.

I am running a private installation of redmine.

It has projects (and sub-projects), an RBAC system, issue tracking (and each project can have multiple "trackers" associated with it), milestones, file management, per-project wiki and forums, time tracking (with Gantt charts), it supports LDAP, multiple languages and multiple databases and has a nice e-mail-based interface to manage issues, if you need it.

It is also integrated with the most popular VCSes (Git, SVN, Bazaar, Darcs, CVS): other than providing a repository browser (+diff viewer) you can close tickets by putting some special text (e.g.: "closes #10") inside your check-in comments.

It might not be as complete as commercial alternatives but it's an over-the-average open source web application in this field.

They also have a demo server at: http://demo.redmine.org/

I've run into the same battle with Basecamp.. not having dependencies and estimates makes it less of a Project Management tool and more of a todo list manager.

But towards that goal - including projects, milestones, tasks, users, reminders, reports, and even detailed ACL's - you should check out web2project - http://web2project.net/ It's a fork of dotProject that we initiated back in 2007 and have been working on ever since. The most useful part for me is the iCal output. I subscribe to it and all my tasks/todo items appear on my calendar automagically. In v2.0 - due this month - we have user-based timezones and a variety of other things coming.

Also, if you do want the simple todo as a part of it, you can add the Todos Module - https://sourceforge.net/projects/web2project-mod/files/

And yes, it's all 100% Open Source under GPL. It's hosted on Sourceforge but you can check it out under Github too: http://github.com/caseysoftware/web2project

Disclosure: I am a core web2project contributor and wrote the Todos Module.

Collbative or ProjectPier are worth testing.
