jQueryUI button state stuck when using click events

I am having the same problem as this person except I am using a regular html button. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3077080/jqueryui-radio-button-state-and-click-events. The answer provided there seems to work for radio buttons, but it doesn't work for me.

The state is maintaining a state of focus after I click on the button.
