What is the difference between Page.Master and Master object that comes via MasterType directive.

What is the difference between the these two masters ?

<MasterType VirtualPath="PathToMaster"/>
 Master.FunctionName();

and 

Page.Master;

I have noticed that from the first, we can call the functions on the master page and from the second we can not.
