In line with the other list here that lists closed source projects that have decided to open source their code, this list is for the opposite: open source projects that decided to close source their code.

If you know of any, please add: its name and URL if you know it, what type of software is it, some proof that they were not open source from the start (such as a link about them going open source.)

  • Global File System: originally GPL'd → proprietary in 2001(?) → re-GPL'd in 2004. reference

Paint.NET

It seems to me that someone inside MS urged him to close the source code.

Paint.NET was not closed due to actions by Microsoft - the author got tired of rip-off artists selling the product (or derived products) without following the license.

@Lawrence Oluyede: Why the heck would *Microsoft* worry about Paint.NET ?
SigTerm
Don't know, I've never seen the source code. Anyway my thought was not on "worrying about" Paint.NET but just preserving know how and future features to become opensource. Thanks Michael for the explanation, so the problem lies in someone in the community that wasn't following the license

@Lawrence Oluyede: I think that before saying something like "MS urged to close Paint.NET" it makes sense to think *WHY* they would want to do that. "Don't know, never seen the code" is not a good answer. You see, as any sane commercial organization Microsoft mostly cares about profit. And I certainly don't see how making __.NET__ image editor closed source could possibly bring them any financial gains. M$ doesn't seem to be developing image editors anyway.

They have Paint and the Photo Gallery which has some editing functions. Anyway I have your point. Thanks
