I would first like to encourage you to do your own homework; I'm a parent, after all. Having said that, I can't help myself...
This seems pretty straight-forward:
Your inventory could be stored in a database, which would be accessed and updated every time an item was sold, bought, lost, stolen, etc. You could control it with many different interfaces, including a bar-code scanner that communicates with your database via another interface. All you really need to do to get more examples of how inventory is tied into computers and computer science is look at how inventory is controlled; its all computers now.
