I've been experimenting with several lightweight markup languages, to be precise the ones from this list at Wikipedia: Comparison of lightweight markup language syntax.

Honestly, apart from the rules for italic/bold/underline styling, their syntax is incredibly inconsistent and painful to remember.

Look at the example for the well known Textile for instance:
+*_- bold italic strikethrough underlined text -_*+

It looks quite cryptic to me. And, of course, rules vary slightly (though unimportantly) from one lightweight markup language to the other, so that one could make the difference which it is and start trying all possible characters for it to work.

It turns out, that it's less stressful to me to write XML after all (at least for the moment).

So do you know of a more rigorous leightweight and non-cryptic LW markup language?

Why don't they, at least, normalize the differences between the common available LWMS so that one wouldn't have to wonder.

Thanks!
