Hi,

I wanted to know how to do this. I realize this is kind of esoteric knowledge, since it's not really necessary. However, it is a topic of interest to me, and I would like to know about it.

What I don't understand is how compiz works as a whole. If gtk-window-decorator is just a program by itself (which I believe it is), then how does it interface with the rest of compiz?

Thanks in advance.

A:

Compiz decoratoration is actually handled by Emerald. There's documentation on that wiki page, it looks to be mostly a collection of images. Gnome-look.org has a ton of Compiz themes, which are actually Emerald files. You can start from here.

stillinbeta: Actually, I think compiz decoration is currently done by gtk-window-decorator by default. Emerald can be deployed as a replacement, yes. Emerald was the default decorator for Baryl before the projects merged, so maybe that's why you have them confused. They change quite often don't they? :)

Huh, I guess you're right. I think you /could/ use emerald if you wanted to, but it appears it's no longer the default? I don't run Compiz anymore, so I don't know. Regardless, I think you could find examples on gtk-window-decorator on gnome-look.org too.

But I kind of wanted to write a replacement for gtk-window-decorator / Emerald. I know themes are generally easy to make (there are thousands of them on some sites), but I'm not very interested in those. I just want to see how the window decorations work in compiz, that's all. Anyway, thanks for your response!
