Hi there,

Are there any "good", clean, reliable and trustworthy "out-of-the-box" Amazon EC2 AMI images for CentOS that uses EBS storage by default (instead of instance storage)?

The RightScale AMIs seem pretty popular but they are only with instance storage.

I can't find any information or "Top AMIs" lists..

Thanks a lot in advance.

Cheers,

Daniel

I see at least six RightScale EBS-based images with CentOS:

  • ami-2342a94a (411009282317/RightImage_CentOS_5.4_i386_v5.5.9_EBS)
  • ami-4d42a924 (411009282317/RightImage_CentOS_5.4_x64_v5.5.9_EBS)
  • ami-8337deea (411009282317/RightImage_CentOS_5.4_i386_v5.3_EBS_Beta)
  • ami-8737deee (411009282317/RightImage_CentOS_5.4_x64_v5.3_EBS_Beta)
  • ami-d0e901b9 (411009282317/RightImage_CentOS_5.4_x64_v5.4.6.2_EBS_Beta)
  • ami-dc977fb5 (411009282317/RightImage_CentOS_5.4_i386_v5.4.6_EBS_Beta)

I can't comment on their quality, but they should be save to use. If in doubt I'd review the guidelines on using shared AMIs. But it looks like they are all RightScale, so I doubt there is anything wrong with them.

Down the road, you could always create your own (customized) AMI.

Yes, saw them too now.... not sure why I did not see them earlier. Now I feel silly ;) ... but thanks heaps for the answer!

I'm using 411009282317/RightImage_CentOS_5.4_x64_v5.5.9_EBS without any trouble. Only complaint is that some of the software is old, in particular only Python 2.4 is supported. But if you're looking at CentOS you probably know this already.

The product we sell has an inbuilt search engine for AMIs. I just logged into my account to paste back a few, but it turns out there are 40+ different EBS-backed machines available (at least in the US East data center). So, despite being a minor plug, you may want to play around with our solution to help you filter through machines avaialble in EC2: http://LabSlice.com.

I was actually looking for some sort of assurance of quality of the AMIs - I know that when searching for AMIs you can find a lot of CentOS ones but I was unsure if they were any good and which ones were highly rated and if any kids had planted some sort of beacons in them etc... thanks for the answer anyway though.
