If you're looking for Open Source projects then SourceForge is probably your best bet.
This forum post from Dream in Code should give you a few good ideas if you're stuck on ideas for a project to create by yourself.

My next hackject will be in Python on the Boxee software stack. Check it out at boxee.com.
I am going to build some feeds for popular sites so they will end up as add-on's in Boxee.
