I'm looking for software career opporunities in Europe. What career sites can you recommend? (They can be specific to a country.)

jobserve.co.uk was the site I always used when I was working in the UK/Europe. It always used to have a load of jobs throughout the UK and Europe.

Of course, with the current world financial situation, pickings are a bit thin. If you don't have a visa for working in the countries concerned, you'll have a real problem working there (legally anyway)... Visas are nowhere near as easy to come by as they used to be.

+1 for visa notes. I, too, have found good jobs through Jobserve. Part of the trick in the UK is to get on the radar of the specialist recruitment consultants in your technology in the place you want to work: then, often, they'll find you.

A couple good ones in germany are stepstone.de and jobscount24.de

I would also recommend checking out xing for networking if possible. Lot's of recruiters look there.

The biggest websites to find jobs in Germany (including IT jobs) would be:

They have no english interface though.

Monster has recently got a terrible interface in terms of usability. I'd call it one of the worst big web site designs I've ever come up across.

Another issue with Monster (which recently assimilated jobpilot.de) is that it's quite expensive for job publishers (around 800 Euro start price for an ad), so many don't bother publishing ads there and search personnel through other connections.

Having got some experience with these career sites and their publishers I can definitely tell you that a huge portion of those are not serious about searching employees. They regularly (re)publish ads, they process incoming cvs, invite people to interviews, even compensate travel expenses but do not take anyone. I've heard people talking about looking like growing in the eyes of the stakeholders and needing to occupy HRs with something.

It was quite unpleasant experience having contacts with german employers even before the crisis, have no idea what the things are right now.

Here is a list of top 500 German IT companies.

TOP500 IT-Unternehmen in Deutschland

I once tried going through them but couldn't find really anything about Microsoft technologies though...

thanks, so, can you recommend any alternative methods for my career pursuit?

Hands off I could suggest putting a signature to your account in various technical forums like "Open for job suggestions in country Y". You website could also do. Also visit some technical expositions and events, you could harvest something there.

On the other hand, my experience with special career events also shows there is not much there. Companies distribute print-outs of their online ads and suggest you apply online. Many of them were not taking it seriously and were looking like just enjoying having a day off the office.

cwjobs.co.uk is the Jobsite for Computer Weekly which is a popular industry paper in the UK.
