I've tried to research this through searching, but got nowhere. Has anyone done a survey of open source programmers to answer questions such as:

  • Do you do this as part of your job?
  • If so, how much of your job is it?
  • If you do it in your spare time, how much time do you spend on it?
  • Are you a student?
  • What motivates you?

I'm amazed at how many lines of open source code have been written, and I wonder where it all comes from.

I'm not wanting to do such a survey myself, it's only curiosity, not something I need to find out.

I would say for a random selection of people the answers to 1 - 4 are "yes" :).

For more information on the motivations I recommend reading:

There are hundreds of such studies available. I get such questionnaires at least once a month from different companies/universities.

Thanks for that answer Stefan. I've spent a while googling, but you've given me a good search. I probably should have used the word motivation and that would have returned more suitable stuff than I was finding.
