I enjoy Mathematics and Computer Science. Is there some interdisciplinary field in CS and Mathematics, that would "guarantee" high earnings?

+7  A:

Financial derivatives programming.

I have no idea what that is but it sounds boring as hell :P

A:

Financial maths pays well. Dont know if it's top rank.

Not as much as it was last year at this time. Then again, bonuses still seem to be paid, regardless of performance... 8)

Well I suppose financial maths is at an all time low, but that's going to bounce back ;)

Read "The Black Swan". Modeling hasn't gone away, but Thanksgiving turkeys can tell you that extrapolation is always a dangerous thing, no matter how sophisticated the model.

A professor in Oxford had an interesting point in a BBC podcast. Will quants lose their jobs? - No, totally contrary. We need people to get out of the subprime crisis.

Actuarial Sciences I have been told is the only way a mathematician can break six figures. I would guess that programming related to that would be the best.

Actuarys are the people who decide insurance premium rates, and the math is extremely complex and full of dozens of variables that all impact one another.

Excellent answer! I did not know that.

A:

Discrete.

I've heard it said that Computer Science is just a subset of discrete mathematics. All great programmers have a solid understanding of this discipline. And great programmers break the multi-6-figures mark at nice companies.

A:

Their aren't any guarantees but you got a good combination.

A:

Financial maths, but you need some domain knowledge (i.e. maths and finance).
