Is the forum software used here available for download? I think this would help others to start online discussions to help people on other topics.

I'm pretty sure stackoverflow isn't open source.. But I do recall someone mentioning "Stacked" as an open source implementation of an SO like site. Don't know how complete it is..

Certain parts of the software already are open source. jQuery, for example, or the rich-text editor (markdown) used everywhere are both readily available.

As for the rest, IIRC the founders talked about open sourcing the software at some point in a podcast or blog post or something, but the result was that it's definitely not on the table at moment.

Maybe after it's matured some, but as I see it the general problem is that open sourcing software creates a maintenance burden for managing patches and forks that they were not yet prepared to handle.

Oh, and StackOverflow isn't a "forum" in the traditional sense.
