I'm looking at setting up a Sharepoint server for my small group of co-workers. I'm confused as to what I need to do to ensure we're licensed properly.

We are planning on using the Sharepoint Services that is baked into a standard Windows Server install, not the Office Sharepoint, does each user need a specific Sharepoint CAL?

A:

Nope. Just a Windows Server CAL for each user if you are using just WSS.

No specific SharePoint CALs are required for Windows SharePoint Services (WSS). They are only necessary if deploying Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS).

For WSS sites, you just need a Windows CAL, but if you install the portal software, thats when the SharePoint CALs are needed.

I agree with the accepted answer. Another advantage of a CAL is that it enables Forms Services, which allows web-based use of InfoPath forms without needing InfoPath installed on the client machine.
