What software for GPU benchmarking do you recommend? Also, any suggestions on how to use it?

A:

The most popular bench mark software is 3Dmark. I'm not sure if it is very reliable compared to others, but it has very beautiful elements in it, and its a joy to watch when you have a new GPU.

There is a payed and a free version: http://www.futuremark.com/

You can also give a try to FurMark, but be careful with it ^_^

From their webpage:

What is FurMark?
FurMark is a very intensive OpenGL benchmark that uses fur rendering algorithms to measure the performance of the graphics card. Fur rendering is especially adapted to overheat the GPU and that's why FurMark is also a perfect stability and stress test tool (also called GPU burner) for the graphics card.

A couple more graphics benchmark options: Unigine Heaven (OpenGL or DirectX) Lightsmark (OpenGL) Unigine Tropics(OpenGL or DirectX)

There are several total system benchmarks that also do a good job at evaluating graphics performance: Passmark Performance Test Crystal Mark SiSoft Sandra Lite PC Wizard

All can be found at Test My Geek Stuff.
