I've built out a pet project of mine, and am now looking for a good domain name for it. Arbitrarily doing whois lookups on ideas that pop into my head seems inefficient.

What tools do you use when searching for a good domain name?

Some ideas to get the wheels greased :

  • given a few letters does prefix/suffix/infix searches for available domains
  • suggests other words from a thesaurus
  • shows you short available domains

And of course, another requirement is that the tool isn't shady and quickly registers the domain name while it searches for you.

I type the url into my favorite browser and if nothing comes up then I go buy it. You're basically asking for a website to be creative for you, and that isn't going to happen. I would suggest getting drunk with some of your smart friends or maybe doing some drugs if you're into that, and then brainstorming.

lol. Some creativity can be automated. If I was presented with a list of 100 domains I could then filter by hand to pick one I liked.

$chars = array('L', 'O'); while(1=1){echo $chars[0]; echo $chars[1];} echo $chars[0];

You're looking for a list of good ideas. You aren't going to find any. Nothing truely creative can be automated. A programmer of all people should know that.

There are the things that needs to be automated. And there are some things that has no value in automating. I feel this this requirement belongs to the 2nd kind. The domain name represents your application, your reputation etc. So the naming should be done by your self. Don't try to automate every thing that has no need to do so. Can a website read your mind, then identify your requirement and satisfy you? :D

I don't think he understands that.

Aid is always appreciated in any endeavor. Do you use rulers when drawing straight lines, or cars when wanting to travel long distances? I merely want some tools to help me find available names given some constraints.
Paul Tarjan
If you know your requirement and the constraints then why don't you go ahead and do some creative work other than going to depend on other's software\site?

Generic answers for a generic product.

There is a command-line Whois utility written by Mark Russinovich. You can embed it in a script. The input is prefix/suffix/infix, the output will be domain registrar information or nothing if the domain is not registered.

Hope that helps.
