I am an undergraduate looking to go to grad school for a masters or PhD. I have worked on several different projects which relied heavily upon a SQL database (MySQL and SQL Server). I have enjoyed this work and feel that I have developed a pretty strong working knowledge of SQL. I see that MySQL offers developer certification and I am curious if this is a worthwhile investment.

In general, when is it advantageous to get a MySQL developer certification? What are the potential benefits?

I must admit, I've been using MySQL for over 10 years, I've been in charge of recruitment for around 8 people for MySQL based roles in that time and have yet to meet anyone with a MySQL certification... Personally, I think "demonstrative evidence" (i.e. "can you show me something you've done with MySQL/what is the SQL syntax to do X") is better then certification.

The problem with this, is that you need to sit behind N people while they demonstrate the evidence. Certification should be used as 1 tool as part of a broader screening process, and nothing else.
