I would like to learn what tools there are and whether you have positive or negative experiences with them.

For me important features are

  1. Nesting of tasks within tasks
  2. calculation of effort summaries across task hierarchies
  3. dependencies between tasks
  4. resource allocation
  5. Gantt or other timeline view

I stumbled across OpenPROJ and it sounds promising. Any experiences?

Thank you!

That looks interesting although it probably does not fit our working model very well (more classic planning) because it seems geared towards agile projects. Thanks!

I have used a bit OpenPROJ and it does what its needs to do and resembles very much to Microsoft Project. So much that it quickly gets very complex to maintain project data (like it is the case with Microsoft Project). I have to say that the last version of Microsoft Project I have used is 2000, so I'm not comparing with the latest version.

I know exactly what you mean! MS Project files can become a real mess pretty soon. Thanks for the insight!

I think I go with OpenPROJ for now. It's not as convenient and fast as the original MS product but the best free tool I found so far. Thanks again!

After a few days of working with OpenPROJ I am a bit disappointed. Even basic things like fixed effort tasks do not work. You assign a resource and all of a sudden efforts change. :-(

Some features in the app are links to buy the full version.

The author's blog [1] seems to list quite a few issues. Since I do not have GTK+ runtime installed I could not install it, but considering the feeback mentioned above I deemed it not worth the effort. Thank you anyway![1] http://fmoraes.blogspot.com/2006/06/winplanner-014-released.html

I've used it both on windows and linux, and it performed fairly well. Installing GTK+ isn't that hard. The last version in sourceforge seems to be from 2008 or 2007 though...

I found GanttPV awkward to use. On the Simple Project Management's Planner I stumbled into an 404 after only three clicks into documentation, which put me off. Also, it does not run on Windows (I know, I should have mentioned.). Thank you for your efforts anyway!
