update progress and it shows image while data is pulled from Database. but need to block the screen

Question

I have kept update progress and it shows image while data is pulled from Database.

But our clients are trying to select the drop down options even though update progress (please wait ..) is shown....now i need to disable all the controls (dropdowns etc..) that are shown on page while update progress is shown.

how can i disable the controls (dropdowns) while update progress is displayed or shown on homepage???
