Firstly, the format of your XML file is all screwed up, and needs rewritten as:

Secondly, the ordering of your mapping is not valid according to the DTD. You need to move your <discriminator/> element up so it sits after the <id/> element, instead of being down near the <subclass/> elements:

I think according to following statement you should put discriminator element after id element before property and bag elements

IF that's not the case I suggest you validate your xml using hibernate-mapping schema.
