Hi,

I'm not a native English speaker, hence sometimes I'm in doubts how to pronounce an english acronym properly.

How do you say WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation)?

Thanks.

+4  A:

I'd say it as "double ewe pee eff".

duffymo
the P part was funny :P
Learner
You're easily amused.
duffymo
ya..i don't prefer complexities in amusement :)
Learner
It's spelled "yeah." What's the deal with all these people who don't know how to spell yeah anymore? Are we so lazy with our crackberries that we've given up on spelling the simplest of words?
Robert Harvey
Ya is something that Borat would say.
Robert Harvey
People call that as sms English..or something like that...What's the problem in typing it short if the person in concern understands my message....Although this sort of English(??) is disastrous in applications :)
Learner
I mean to say job applications

Double U, Pee, Eff

Dub-You, Pee, Eff

How's that? :)

Not everything that appears on a computer screen is meant to be pronounced. I say the letters individually (W - P - F), or speak it out (Windows Presentation Foundation).

win-(ˌ)dōz prē-ˌzen-ˈtā-shən fau̇n-ˈdā-shən

If you need the audio, look up Window, Presentation, and Foundation on Merriam Webster Online, an click the audio links for each of the words.

Robert Harvey
the question was about how to pronounce the abbreviation, not the full name...
Thomas Levesque
It's not a real question anyway. Notice that it's been closed?

It's a three letter abbreviation (like S.O.S.) not an acronym (like RADAR).

As an aside I think SQL should be S-Q-L not Sequal (or Sequel), but if I tried to correct every body I'd get precisely nowhere.

ChrisF
I believe the "official" pronunciation is actually S-Q-L. Certainly, that's how I say it.
Noldorin
I always used to say S-Q-L, but the first time I heard someone just call it sequel, I was like "whoa...that's so much easier!" And I've never looked back.
Carson Myers
The first time I heard some body saying Sequel for SQL, I didn't understand it..I had to ask what it meant.
Naveen
@Naveen - I think I did a double take too the first time I heard it. I'd been away from databases for a while so I hadn't kept up with the changes in terminology etc.
ChrisF
I always felt "squeal" was the more appropriate pronunciation.
Good Time Tribe
SQL = squirrel. All other pronunciations are inferior ;)
Lee B
@Lee B: +1 for you! Haha... My teacher in RDBMS class quizzed us during our first lesson years ago, asking how else SQL could be pronounced. He hinted that we could try reading the letters as a word and my first thought was 'Squirrel' as well. Got a little disappointed when he said it was instead the boring ol' 'Sequel'.

I say it as ˈdʌbjə 'piː 'ɛf, which I'm pretty sure is how it's intended to be spoken. (That's effectively dub-yu pee eff, in a slightly more readable form).

You can pronounce it WAHPUFF or WUPOOF if you want.

Carson Myers
And do you prefer C-Pound or C-Hash? :-)
Tommy Carlier
C-tic-tac-toe actually. And why the downvote? It's a valid suggestion :) I _did_ say "if you want."
Carson Myers
I didn't down-vote you. I thought it was funny.
Tommy Carlier
I prefer "whipf" personally.
