Hi,

I've been asked to research creating a solution around VMWare ESX and VDI. This will require extensive use of the APIs for managing the solution. It will also look to leverage the VDM client.

Can anyone recommend a good book which will get me started on this topic.

Thanks.

VMware publishes pretty comprehensive tech docs (e.g. SDK & API), which I'd always prefer over a written/published/printed book since they are (probably) more up to date and contain less errors.

Having said that I also know that it is sometimes easier to learn from paper, so you could either print those documents or buy a book off of Amazon.

I'd probably buy the one that has the best reviews. I know, not really greatest recommendation but unless there are a bunch of profound 0-star reviews the number of reviews and overall rating is a great indicator if that book actually helped people or not.

I recommend you take a look at the VI Toolkit for Powershell for some of your management needs (http://vmware.com/go/powershell). The VMware community for the toolkit can be found here: http://communities.vmware.com/community/developer/windows_toolkit. There is also an FAQ here: http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-4210.

For VDI: have a look at the documentation in VirtualBox SDK For Vmware: maybe, "Programmer's Guide" and wait a bit for this one - http://vmblog.com/archive/2008/04/20/announcing-programming-and-managing-vmware-infrastructure-by-o-reilly.aspx
