What is the Q4 2009 lineup of Intel and AMD consumer level processors, and what are the basic differences between them?

I'm out of the loop with respect to the specific differences between the various Intel and AMD processors. For example, what's the difference between Core 2, i5, and i7? What are the comparable AMD processors?

I'm talking basic system architecture here, not minute differences.
