I have just found this: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms977865.aspx

This MSDN article describes Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 behavior used to implement a demo WYSIWYG XML document editor, shows features that make WYSIWYG XML content editing easy and familiar to word processor users, and makes native XML editing available with edit view icons to access control attributes or fields in the underlying XML document.

I find this is a really cool and seemingly useful technology!

Is there any real project out there that does this?

A:

The Eclipse IDE has design views for XML and XML schema files. Thoses views remove a lot of the XML clutter but they are still very generic. It might not be the tool you are looking for.

Another option is to use a custom XML schema in Microsoft Word. More info is here.

Yes, there is Xopus.

Xopus is a WYSIWYG XML Editor that runs in your browser. Xopus enables authors to work with structured and complex content without the need for technical knowledge. Xopus presents the author with a friendly interface to XML. The author cannot break the XML structure or write content that does not conform to the XML Schema.
