If ASP.NET is available on the server side, I can recommend you this ASP.NET File Manager Control. You can embed it into any layout and pass user permissions and folder locations as parameters. The UI is neat and fast by using AJAX. It also features Flash Upload which allows you to select multiple files in the file selection dialog box when uploading.

Thanks. We don't have ASP.NET available—we're running Linux—but I'll keep this in mind for if we someday switch to a Windows server.
