Sharepoint 2007 'Approval Status' does not update

Question

Sharepoint approval status stopped working for some reason. When approving an item posted to a Sharepoint calendar, the item does not appear. If you open the item, it still shows 'Pending' even though it was approved by authorized person. Standard workflow was configured, but maybe it requires a custom workflow using Sharepoint Designer?

I'm getting a similar result using the out of the box approval workflow on the Pages library. After turning off the function that stops the workflow from being cancelled when an approver edits and then approvers a page that had already been submitted for approval, the page is not automatically approved. The workflow history states the following:

Post-completion activity performed. Approval status could not be updated.
