I'm interested in what is the potential of SQL Server when it comes to volume of data (size of the database, number of rows, etc.).

Probably a few Terabytes... but who knows... it's usually not public information (as these are production database of real companies).
the official numbers are 524272 Terabytes. (for the largest possible database size...)
check this Link for all the other information and sizing numbers for sql (2008)

it will probably be more the one "server" but a cluster of many servers, using some kind of shared storage or even distributed, as no server can hold this amount of data, on it's own.I actually think this number is theoretical, as no public storage system today has this capacity.
