I was wondering what advice, or what best-practices are currently being employed specifically for hosted software?

The best practices for architecture and hosting for any application can only be determined by considering the application, the business into or for which it is being deployed, and any number of other factors. There is no answer to your question as you have phrased it.
Start with the Requirements, work your way through Implementation Options, perform a Comparison Analysis and finally select the Service that meets the targets.
Perhaps you should start by reading about multitenancy architecture and then ask a more focused question.
