Stackoverflow diff system

How can I implement a text diff system that is similar to the one Stackoverflow is using. Could someone explain the overview of the system behind it?

It says the compare tool used on SO is Beyond Compare 3.

Isn't that just the tool they use for comparing source code files when developing, not what they use to display differences between revisions?
