Hello...I'm looking for an alternative to FTP for our computer-skittish employees who don't like FTP.

This isn't for online backups, but a way for several employees to have a common area to upload files and then send a URL so an outsider can download the file without the outsider needing to log on.

  • Drop-dead easy and non-threatening.
  • Administrators can add/edit users and permissions to a common area.
  • Can link downloads to outsiders so they can download without needing to log in.
  • Free or paid.
  • SaaS or self-hosted.

I've looked into Dropbox and Box.net but neither is quite right. Box.net is close but the way they do "collaborators" is cumbersome for us. Dropbox is more of a backup tool and likes to use a client app and a common area is problematic.

Any suggestions?

TIA!

Try ZumoDrive. It's very simple, allows like, has both a free and paid version, can edit permissions to a combined area, and it's a SaaS service.

No thank you. That's more of a Dropbox alternative with the same limitations for us. It's a client app, and doesn't have multiple users or a common upload area, and no URLs for downloads to outsiders.Any other suggestions?

Actually, it has all of that. I don't personally like it because the URLs aren't by their nature secure but it has them (it doesn't ask for users to enter a username/password when accessing a URL, which for my needs is essential. It is also a web app as well.

I started using RadUpload in my CMS and it works great. It's java based and uploading is a snap. I had to seriously modify their .NET example for uploading, but I'm willing to share if you want.

As for permissions, I built all of that in using .NET Membership.

Not quite the same, but how about yousendit.com as it makes sense to users used to email.

Thanks. I'll take a look. At first glance it seems there's not a common area (upload once, send links to multiple downloaders over time). But their SiteDrop service might be closer. I'll sign up and give it a spin. Thanks again.

Interesting. Not sure if it'll work for what I'm looking for, but our marketing dept might be interested! We'll check it out.
