If I understood the GPL/LGPL and other similar license FAQ's correctly, I can put my name in a License file and/or add a copyright notice with my name in the source files, and that's pretty much a done deal.

But how can one claim to be the author of 'xyz' software if the copyright notice only states the authors First and Last name? What if my name is James Smith, and there are thousands of James Smith's out there? I'm talking about name clashes. Anyone named James Smith could claim to be the original author, right?

Apart from registering a company name, is there any other way I could clearly state who is the original author of 'xyz' software?

or street address, or social security number or telephone number or date of birth ...

change over time would be okay, I suppose, as long as you can establish that at the time of the copyright notice, the identifying piece belonged to you.
