I know most of the basics and can figure out most things on my own. . . but where can I use this knowledge? I want projects to work on or contribute to.

I have things I do at work but I want something I can really sink my "teeth" into.

How about contributing to open source projects?

Have you looked into every open source project? That would be my suggestion for where you could use that knowledge. If that doesn't work, you could consider volunteering for a non-profit that may have some programming work that may be an option.

Go to SourceForge.net and join (or start) an open source project. This is a great way to get in on an existing project and see "real" code.

Plus, you'd be contributing to open source software, which many consider to be a good cause.

Why not start your own personal project? I've found nothing can immerse you in and teach you as much as striving to develop your own application from the ground up.
