My mission is to take an existing SWF file, decompile it, change a few things (mostly localization stuff) and then republish it. So I figure to get a SWF decompiler program that will extract the FLA file from the SWF, edit the FLA and then - publish it.

As far as I know this is the most commonly used SWF decomplie program. One problem with this one - it costs.

I'd like to know if there are any alternatives (preferably free) to SWF decompression software in the market that could perform my requested operation.

You will not find a better decompiler than Sothink's. Trillix offers one that seems pretty good from what I have seen, but I know Sothink works well. I have used it a number of times on swfs where I accidentally deleted, saved over, or otherwise screwed up my FLA. If you simply want to get a glimpse of how something is being done on someone else's swf, and you want to do it for free, there are several swf -> asb (actionscript byte code) converters. The only problem there is you need to learn to read asb, which isn't very easy at first.

Aside the money issue I'll probably go with Sothink's decompiler.
