I am looking for an English grammar checker engine (not spell checker) to be used on server side in .NET and Windows. I found one at wintertree-software.com but it's over $1000. Found these resources 1, 2 on SO.

I prefer to use a ready to use engine. Feed it sentences, paragraph or text documents and it spits out grammar suggestions as text. I could a web service if it's free. Engine software should cost $200 or less. Any suggestions?

AbiWord is open-source so you could likely see how they did it.

But just as an aside, $1,000 doesn't seem that expensive if it does what you need?

$1000 is a lot of money for a piece of software for most people. (BTW it's $1250). Usually people don't buy something regardless of how expensive it is just because it does the job.

My experience has been the opposite. One of my colleagues looks very little at the money after his former boss told him that he spent $300 worth of company time to save $100 on a computer. You didn't talk about your budget or timeline, but your time is never free. If you have absolutely no money at your disposal then you have no choice, but comparing buying vs. researching or coding from scratch is always a good thing to consider.

It's for personal use and it's not a software I really need. That's why I set a limit of $200. I have been specific about my requirements and one of the requirements was price. Believe me, I understand all about buy vs build it yourself discussion.

Oh ok ... was under the impression this was a business venture, but personal use is different. I agree.
