I know there's been a few questions asked similar, and plenty of advice that might lead one to doing more reading, trying out things on ones own, getting involved in groups and such.

However, I've been having particular success, in a different field, with a Mentor delivering his services over Skype, and particularly now, with Skype's ability to share the screen over video, rather than your mentors' 'attractive' smiling face.

What I want is a weekly/on call "programming/server admin" mentor that can help me stay on course, and lead me ever further, to becoming an excellent and efficient programmer.

I'm particularly interested in Python/Django and web design, however, I'm sure this question can apply agnostically.

This person would be able to see my screen, and I his/hers, and we'd be able to follow a program of learning, or ad hoc problem solving, depending on the context.

We'd be able to set a program of learning, and tasks to complete during the week, between calls. I'd be able to request an adhoc session if I needed help to get unstuck.

Of course, I expect this would be a paid services arrangement, however, I know that some folks are generous with their time, and even bartering situations might occur.

So, summarise the question, does this kind of thing already occur? And does it sound interesting to you?

I think it's a great idea. I am not sure there currently is a way to do it. There are many similar websites for other purposes, like languages (livemocha, for instance).

Good luck building yet another web 2.0 social website :)
