"compress" command doesn't work on Suse 11. Is it possible to get the compress utility for Suse 11 from somewhere?
A:
The functionality of compress
is provided by gzip
these days.
I believe gzip will decompress 'compressed' files.
That is, .Z
files compressed by compress
.
I suppose they believed that no-one would want to generate .Z
files.
EDIT: one of the links in the Wikipedia article about Compress mentioned a public-domain version called ncompress. I just installed ncompress on my Ubuntu 9.10 It provides both 'compress' and 'uncompress'. I don't know if something similar is possible on SUSE 11

yes, but I've a requirement wherein I need to use compress command instead of gzip.

I see. And it's difficult to Google for compression software whose name is 'compress', as I just found out. But I'll keep looking.

@user65457, I found several links on the Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compress) to source code and executable files (?) There's even a ZIP file containing a Windows port of Compress. It might run in Wine.
