I am currently doing my MS degree in computer science. i have a 100% Graduate Assistantship at my university, and I am currently working as a full-time software developer at a company. I admit that its very tough to do both....but doable. So my question is: is it possible to do PhD in this way too. I mean is it possible to have a part-time job and at the same time be a full-time PhD student with 100% assistantship?

Do not try to work when on a Ph.D program. It will NEVER work. Unless you come up with something that is of such academic significance that it will knock the socks off the world and your thesis will only take 20 pages with references -- very few people have acquired these.

You might want to look at Eng.D's or something similar if you are not in the UK.

I don’t understand your reasoning. Can you expand on that?

well, it is possible, but the work needs to be closely related to the Ph.D, and you need to be surrounded by inspiration. It is a well known statistic that people who start working won't complete their write-up. If the work is stressful it will be very hard to keep a fresh mind for research.
