Once they get through some of the basic material you can find applications that make the source code available at GrailsCrowd. For me a picture of source code is sometimes worth a thousand words of explanation.

For learning Groovy, I'd like to add PLEAC. It's a Cookbook that shows the Perl Cookbook examples implemented in several languages, including Groovy.
