Look into the HTML Agility Pack, which will allow you to use XPATH expressions to parse through HTML. I suggest you use it to get rid of the comment blocks and remove the <style> sections.

I think I'd try to decide which formatting I actually want to see: maybe just bold, italic and underline. I'd then find the styles Word uses to indicate those. There might be more than one set of styles used to indicate particular formatting. I'd then add those styles to my <head> section always. I'd then remove all the <style> sections added by Word.

The problem with getting rid of the <style> tag is that you then lose the formatting the user has created such as, in this case, bolding.

@griegs: it depends on whether the OP wants `<style>` tags in the middle of his HTML. Maybe he can move them into his `<head>` instead.

Yeah but Word creates so many of the stupid things that you end up with a massive html file. There is a real need i think for a jQuery plugin that is Word smart and can strip all the non essential meta and style data.

Yeah quite! You'd need to scan the html, pick out the used styles and only include them. Not a plugin i have time to write. :)

Ya I can't just blindly remove style tabs as the rich html editor I use uses it to do it's styling tabs and I can't move it to the head or anything otherwise I have to basically write my own rich html editor. So I am not sure what to do. I would like to strip all the grabage out but I guess the next solution would tell users not to copy and paste text from word files into it?

Like the one short tutorial I saw on there site is loading up and html page or something like that. I want to parse a string containing all that code. How do I do that?
