I (Jonathan Holland) registered for Seattle Code Camp here in Redmond.
For those who have attended conferences like this, is it best to bring your laptop and follow along? Any other tips? Are programming conferences generally worth going to?

I've had the pleasure of attending and/or speaking at several of these around the country. Your best bet is to watch the schedule - some of the talks are better suited than others to be working. Your best bet is to bring your laptop and present - Code Camps are designed to get people from the community presenting to the community.
And if you are going to present, I highly recommend reading Even a Geek Can Speak.

This should more correctly be called Seattle Code Camp as it's not sponsored by Microsoft.
I've attended 2 code camps so far, and I prefer having a laptop with me. It's not required, but it does make it a lot easier to try things out on the spot. I have a tendency to 1/2 pay attention to speakers and 1/2 try to play with what they're talking about while they talk though. It's certainly not required though.
I'm planning on attending this year (already registered) as well. :)
