GPL, MS-PL, LGPL, MIT, Creative Commons, etc.

There are a lot of licenses to your software and sources. I would like to know about that licenses (and another important ones), but on simple statements, like "free for non commercial use" or "source is free for modify but maintain the credits", etc.

A:

The licenses that you are curious about are defined licensing classifications of Creative Commons, but typically exist entirely on their own with their own language. When a license exists entirely on its own with its own language it typically is more difficult to enforce and has little legal backing.

I use such a create your own license on my Pretty Diff tool. The expectation there is that I just don't want people taking credit where it is not due if I worked my ass off on it and I use work from other people who likewise worked their ass off.
